Chances are, if you're into using cannabis extracts and concentrates, you've probably heard of a nectar collector. But, truth be told, they are niche enough that there is also a chance you haven't! Nectar collectors go by a few similar names. Dab straw, honey straw, honey collector, etc. The name "nectar collector" is technically the brand name, but it became synonymous with the dab rigs themselves. So much so that many people use the above terms interchangeably now, as you would with "tissue" and "Kleenex." Basically, a nectar collector is a vertical straw dab rig.

Here at NuggClub, we're big fans of cannabis extracts and nectar collectors. That's why we wrote this article to show you how to use a nectar collector and educate those who may be interested but unfamiliar.

What is a Nectar Collector?

Nectar collectors are a type of dab rig. It's a small, vertically shaped dab rig that is perfect for your favorite marijuana extracts and concentrates. Their small-medium size makes them comfortable to transport and easy to use. However, they do need small amounts of water to use. Nectar collectors vary dramatically both in their design and style. Yet, each has the same essential characteristics. These are:

  • A glass or silicone mouthpiece that's used to inhale the concentrate vapor,
  • A small water chamber that's used to filter and cool the dab vapor down,
  • A ceramic, titanium, or quartz tip that's heated with a blow torch to vaporize the actual extract,
  • A glass or silicone receptacle that can be used to store a small amount of your cannabis concentrates.

So, How Does a Nectar Collector Work?

If you've used dabs or concentrates before, you'll probably find the use of nectar collectors intuitive and straightforward. Nevertheless, we're not going to make any assumptions. If you're a complete beginner, here's our step-by-step instructions on how to use your new nectar collector:

  1. Add some water to the water chamber. The exact amounts will depend on the particular rig, but this can be found in the included product instructions,
  2. Connect the mouthpiece and dab tip to the rest of the collector,
  3. Place your desired amount of the extract in the dab container,
  4. Heat the dab tip using your torch or flame for approximately 30 - 60 seconds,
  5. Before going further, give the tip 15 - 30 seconds to cool somewhat (if the tip is too hot, the dabs will combust instead of vaporizing, making for a harsh/painful inhale),
  6. Slowly touch the collector tip to the surface of the extract while inhaling through the mouthpiece,
  7. Be sure to detach the tip from the surface of the extract as soon as you are finished, but allow it some more time to cool completely before touching it to avoid burns.

As time goes on and you use your nectar collector more, you'll acquire a better feel for the sweet spot temperature ranges. You'll want to explore different kinds of concentrates to find what works best in your collector, along with those you enjoy the most. It can feel overwhelming with all the various extract products and brands on the market today. But, don't worry, it will all become clear with time!

Also, it must be remembered: cannabis extracts are significantly more potent than cannabis flower. Don't make the mistake of using concentrates in the way you use flower. Otherwise, you could potentially use too much and feel deeply uncomfortable. Always go low and slow until you become more familiar with marijuana concentrates.

What Extracts Can Be Consumed Using a Nectar Collector

Nectar collectors, first and foremost, are dab rigs. This means marijuana flower cannot be consumed in a nectar collector. However, almost every cannabis concentrate is fair game.

The most popular extracts that are consumed using a nectar collector coincide with the most popular concentrates more generally:

  • Crumble
  • Live resin
  • Wax
  • Shatter
  • Oil
  • Budder
  • Rosin
  • Hash

Why Should I Use A Nectar Collector?

There are many options available when it comes to dab rigs. It's natural to ask: why should I use a nectar collector? Every rig can produce a similar high, but nectar collectors come with their own set of unique benefits. This is especially true for beginning dabbers.

  • Very easy to use: First off, nectar collectors are very easy to use. You just need to heat the tip, touch it against your extract while inhaling. That's it!
  • They're cost-effective: When it comes to simple collectors such as honey straws, they are some of the most affordable dab rigs you can find. You can find them for $15 - $30 in most head shops.
  • Easily portable: Nectar collectors are perhaps the most practical dab rig to transport.
  • Less wasted concentrate: Taking dabs using a nectar collector is one of the best ways to conserve your supply of the extract. Other rigs are usually less efficient than collectors and straws and waste more product during their use.

How To Clean a Nectar Collector

Nectar collectors are great, but that doesn't mean you won't have to clean them from time to time. With frequent use, you'll find a build-up of spent oil accumulating within the collector straw. You'll need to keep it clean to keep it sanitary and looking nice. Because of the many nooks and crannies within a nectar collector, you won’t be able to simply clean it with a cloth. Here's exactly how you can get it done:

    Supplies You’ll Need:

  • Isopropyl alcohol (preferably 91% or higher).
  • Salt (roughly ½ a teaspoon),
  • Water,
  • Small plastic containers or bags. You'll want to place each piece into a separate bag or container to avoid breaking any delicate parts,
  • Q tips,
  • Pipe cleaners,
  • Paper towels,
  • Gloves.

  Cleaning the Collector, Step-by-Step:

  1. Disassemble the rig as much as you can.
  2. Drain the dirty water from the chamber.
  3. Add the isopropyl alcohol and salt mixture into each bag/container.
  4. Then, stir and shake.
  5. Place each of the pieces into their bag/container. Be sure the alcohol/salt mix can get into as much of the pieces as possible.
  6. Allow the nectar to rest for one hour, at the very least. Ideally, you want to leave it overnight.
  7. Remove each piece and look for any remaining residue. If there is any left, use your Q tips or pipe cleaners to gently remove it.
  8. Rinse every piece thoroughly with water. You don't want any of the alcohol to remain in the collector.
  9. Use your paper towels to absorb most of the moisture before allowing it to air dry completely.
  10. Once dry, reassemble and enjoy your nectar collector.

How Much Will It Cost, Typically, to Buy a Nectar Collector?

A typical honey straw will cost anywhere from $15 to $30. You'll need a torch to use it, and you can find these for sale for $30 - $40. However, if you’re interested in purchasing one of the original, brand-name Nectar Collectors, you can find kits being sold for $75.99 - $169.95.

Is Buying a Nectar Collector Worth It?

If you’re actually interested in dabbing, then, yes, a nectar collector is a great addition to your rig collection. They're incredibly easy to use and are much less expensive than some other dab rigs out there. They're especially worth it for those who are new to using cannabis concentrates.

What's The Difference Between a Nectar Collector and a Honey Straw?

Truth be told, there is no difference. As we mentioned, the name 'nectar collector' is just the original brand that famously produced their vertical dab rig. It was so popular that the name stuck and is now used to refer to all comparable devices. Nectar collector, dab straw, honey straw, honey collector, these are all the various names that refer to the same kind of dab rig.
